Victoria apologises to Chinese community

Victoria’s Premier Daniel Andrews apologised on May 25 to the state’s Chinese community for the racism and unjust policies their ancestors endured during the gold rush era.

Among other things, Chinese migrants were taxed on arrival at any Victorian port. They avoided the tax by landing in South Australia and walking hundreds of kilometres from Robe to the Victorian gold fields. The apology came after a group of walkers re-enacted the journey in a 20-day trek.
