
A coalition of environment groups protested outside the Victorian Parliament against the Labor government鈥檚 draconian anti-protest bill on June 21.
The coalition, including the and , called on MPs to withdraw the .
They held up banners reading 鈥渓ogging is criminal in a climate emergency鈥 and 鈥渓ogging fuels climate catastrophe鈥. The , as well as the Melbourne Climate Choir, also made an appearance.
One protester told 91自拍论坛 they opposed 鈥渦ndemocratic laws鈥 that would criminalise forest blockades and other forms of peaceful protest aimed at defending the environment.
As the Environmental Defenders Office pointed out, have recently enacted new anti-protest laws.
Anthony Kelly from the Melbourne Activist Legal Support (MALS) told GL the bill is similar to those laws which 鈥渢arget interventionist forest blockading鈥.
鈥淭he bill increases the penalty for simply being in the forest area, in a forest coupe,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t also criminalises those with lock-on devices and things used in forest blockading.鈥
It also allows authorised officers 鈥渧ery intrusive search powers鈥, he said, including being able to search vehicles and people.
鈥淭here is a lot of concern 鈥 due to [the bill鈥檚] draconian nature and how it really shrinks the space which people have to protest forest destruction.鈥
The bill will also criminalise Traditional Owners from protecting Country under threat from logging. It includes penalties of $21,000 in fines or 12 month鈥檚 jail.
鈥淚ts targeted legislation that is aimed at criminalising disruptive forms of protest, like blockades,鈥 Kelly said. 鈥淎ll forms of protests get in the way; they all disrupt. Human rights courts recognise that, but governments and industry are targeting protests that are stopping injustices.鈥 It is 鈥渃ritical鈥 to resist these laws, he said.
Victorian Forest Alliance spokesperson Nic Fox said: 鈥淭he freedom to protest sits at the heart of our democracy.鈥
Extinction Rebellion spokesperson Miriam Robinson said: 鈥淰icForests is currently facing for unlawful actions in our forests. We must stop this destruction while there is still time. The forests do not belong to the government. They certainly don鈥檛 belong to VicForests. They belong to everyone, now and into the future. We have the right to protect them.鈥
