On October 29, charges of refusing a police direction brought against six people involved in the protest against Kerry Packer's state memorial service in February were dismissed by a magistrate's court.
Socialist Alliance activist and defendant Alex Bainbridge told supporters outside the court that the main issues in the trial were free speech and the right to protest. He told 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly, "After listening to the police evidence over three days, you get the feeling that some of these coppers have missed their calling — they should have taken up careers as fiction writers".
