Why
Fifty years on from the fascist coup of September 1973 we will debate the global effects of dictatorship and caged democracy, based on听Chile1973-2023: Contrarrevoluci贸n y Resistencia听(Verso, 2 volumes,听2024). We integrate diverse perspectives on the coup and neoliberal economy, soon globalised, and popular resistance. In parallel we address Palestinian Resistance to Zionist genocide, and international solidarity with it from Chile and beyond.

Nicola Hadwa Shahwan:听鈥Aggression against Gaza: causes and consequences鈥.
Palestinian-Chilean, Nicola is an international analyst for various agencies including Telesur, Sputnik, Russia Today, HispanTV and Radio Portales, Chile. Nicola is also a member of the Chilean Committee for Solidarity with Palestine and the Latin American League for the Return to Palestine. As a professional football coach Nicola formerly coached the Palestinian national team.
Ximena de la Barra:听鈥淐hile and Palestine. Neocolonialism听or听genocide?鈥
Ximena is an architect, author and social听activist. She participated in the Unidad Popular government led by Salvador Allende, in the first local government post- Franco in Madrid and in the New York local government. She taught at Columbia University in the US and was a high-level officer at the United Nations for 15 years,including Palestine.
Paula S谩nchez:听鈥淟atin America's history of solidarity with Palestine鈥.
Paula is a former Chilean political prisoner and long-time activist in the resistance against the Pinochet dictatorship. She is an Acute Care nurse, Ph.D and academic at Western Sydney University. She is co-founder of the Latin American Social Forum (Sydney), a political activist in global solidarity movements and prominent commentator on Chile in several news outlets.
Robert Austin Henry听(Ph.D, Latin American History) will moderate. His 150+
publications include 15 books. He has worked in Chile, Mexico, Cuba and Venezuelasince 1978, the Anti-Apartheid Movement (1970s), Chile Solidarity Committee (1979-1990) and been recognised by the Cuban government for lifetime solidarity (2018). He participates in the CLACSO Working Group 鈥淧alestine and Latin America鈥.
