Model motion

As noted in the accompanying article, many unions have passed motions against the planned nuclear tests. We think the following text would be a clear statement to be moved at meetings.

"We oppose the French government's proposed resumption of nuclear tests in the South Pacific. It constitutes a threat not only to the peoples of the South Pacific, but to the whole of humanity. It will also jeopardise the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty by providing a convenient excuse for other nuclear powers to follow suit.

"We call on the ACTU and all unions to place industrial bans on all French goods and services and on handling uranium. We call on the Australian government to signal its opposition to the tests by: banning trade with France; ending the mining and export of uranium; closing the US bases and ending all visits by nuclear-powered and armed ships; withdrawing from military cooperation with France, Britain and the US; and supporting the struggles of the peoples of the Pacific for independence and self-determination."
