Strong militant showing in AMWU elections

The returning officer overseeing national office-bearer elections in the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union announced on May 19 that incumbent national secretary Doug Cameron has managed, with some difficulty, to beat off a challenge for his position by the militant Workers First team.

Cameron received 21,000 primary votes (57%), while Workers First candidate Darren Nelson polled strongly, gaining 12,000 votes (32%); two other candidates received 2000 votes each.

In the contest for Victorian state secretary, however, Workers First's Craig Johnston was ahead by several hundred votes at the close of counting on May 19. The result will be announced on May 22 but a Workers First spokesperson said the group was "confident" of winning the Victorian position.
