UNITED STATES: Immigrants given monitoring bracelets

March 16, 2005
Issue

National Public Radio in the US reported on March 2 that 1700 immigrants had been given electronic monitoring bracelets by the Department Of Homeland Security, in a six-month experimental trial. The immigrants have not been accused of a crime, but their immigration status is being challenged by the government. At least one has been ordered to remain indoors from 6pm to 6am every night. If he does not, the bracelet will sound an alarm.
