Three activists from Stop Burrup Hub were given suspended sentences or community service on July 3 by a judge who recognised the altruistic nature of their protest by letting off stink gas at Woodside Energy.

Stink gas is safely used in every mine in Australia as a way to sound the alarm when miners cannot see or hear electronic warnings. They protests was aimed at highlighting that Woodside and federal and state Labor refuse to heed the climate science warnings.

The protesters expressed remorse to those who suffered as a result of smelling the gas.

The judge was critical of the need to divert emergency service and police, but did not mention the huge diversion of services as a result of bushfires and floods made worse by global warming.

Outside the court, Kristen, Joana and Emil called on everyone who cares about young people鈥檚 future to take action to stop Woodside鈥檚 climate and ecological destruction.

Emil said: 鈥淸The Burrup Hub] is the biggest fossil fuel project in the Southern Hemisphere, and we need to stop this to protect the planet and protect future generations ... 聽People are dying because of the climate crisis right now.

鈥淚 would like to ask: Is Woodside sorry for the deaths that it will cause from 6 billion tonnes of CO2 [carbon dioxide]? Is Woodside sorry to the people who have lost their homes and loved ones? Is Woodside sorry to the Traditional Custodians when their artwork is being defaced, destroyed due to the Burrup Hub鈥檚 emissions?鈥

Kris said their actions were aimed at raising consciousness. 鈥淭housands are protesting against the extension of the North West Shelf up on the Burrup Hub [in WA] because we now know how catastrophic it is to life.鈥

They urged others to get involved in the campaign to oppose Woodside鈥檚 Burrup Hub extension.
