Cyn Huang, student and labour activist, and member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) addressed two meetings in Queensland on “Resistance in Trump’s America”.
Huang, a keynote speaker at Ecosocialism 2025, discussed the , the rise of the authoritarian right and the Democratic Party’s shortcomings. They are part of the Bread and Roses Caucus, a militant democratic Marxist caucus within the DSA.
During their visit to Magan-djin/Brisbane and Kombumerri/Gold Coast, Huang recounted the activist and union activity in the United States, including the “No Kings” protests against United States President Donald Trump and numerous workers’ strikes.
The protesters, including DSA members, showed their opposition to the rising militarism in major US cities, as well as the deportation of immigrants without due process.
They also discussed the DSA’s involvement in the campaign to elect Zohran Mamdani as mayor of New York. Huang said the campaign is inspiring enthusiasm, even though there are concerns about his political framing on some topics.
This was the context in which Huang discussed how progressives can hold elected representatives accountable once elected.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s voting record on military funding for Israel is “unjustifiable”, Huang said. She was previously endorsed by DSA, but the DSA does not have any mechanism to enforce MPs to adhere to DSA policy.
