September 18 marks the 40th anniversary of the death of US musician Jimi Hendrix, widely regarded as one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time.
Hendrix鈥檚 identification with progressive politics embodied the ferment of the late 1960s, with songs like 鈥淚f Six Was Nine鈥 (鈥淚鈥檓 gonna wave my freak flag high鈥), 鈥淚 Don鈥檛 Live Today鈥 (about the plight of Native Americans) and the visceral anti-war tone poem 鈥淢achine Gun鈥.

Gogol Bordello have always said their aim is to smuggle Roma music into mainstream Western society.
Their latest album, produced by former Beastie Boys DJ-turned-super-producer Rick Rubin, might just do that.
The US-based band, whose music combines elements of traditional Romani music with punk rock, is largely made up of Eastern European Roma immigrants who understand the long-standing persecution of their people.
